To create the CANOPY series, painter Jessica Loving went to the source for her inspiration: the forest. It is a sacred environment for her, where sounds are softened, light is filtered, and that which remains is held by the tangle of earthen giants holding up the sky. A keen observer of her surroundings, Loving distills the conversation of echoes, visions and textures present in the forest cover, creating a series that reveals the complex, structural ecosystem that thrives above human exchanges.
Utilizing reductive and additive practices to capture the visual poetry of light and shadow at play beneath the richness of a lush tree canopy, she dissolves all representational roots in her pieces, allowing them to convey the essence of the forest. Applying light-reactive glazes and materials such as crushed stone and glass, her pieces interact with the surrounding light as it changes throughout the day, mimicking the way light dances through the leaves.
These mixed media paintings were created by layering pigment, crushed stone, and light-reactive materials such as glass and metallics, amid a crystalline finish. They are inspired by light and seek to engage actively with the changing luminosity of their environment; continuing to participate in the neverending call and response of these contrasting forces.
