The 1970s Winter Collection

“In the corners of seldom-used closets are stacks of yellow and black colored boxes. Within these aged, cardboard, time capsules are tiny squares filled with memories of distant vacations. That’s where the story for this collection begins.

When my family and I return to my childhood home every Christmas, we open these closets and see dozens of Kodak Carousels, each filled with roughly 30 slides. Every year we say we will look at them. Every year we don’t. Until recently. That’s when we set up the frayed white screen and turned off the lights to transport back to winter 1970.

These paintings are slide photos from a trip my parents took in the early 70s to Vail, Colorado. They headed to the mountains for what can only be described as that classic 70s ski trip; primary color ski suits; tight chairlifts; late nights in newly-constructed condos. Working in acrylic on canvas, I recreated these moments at a larger scale, turning each one into a lasting memory,” - Amanda K. Snyder

In this intimate, 10-piece collection of paintings from Amanda K Snyder, she recreates and captures the look, feel and experience of Vail in the 1970s. Her paintings transport the viewer to a nostalgic era, embracing a simpler time while exploring the nuances of memory. Each piece takes the viewer through universally recognized moments on a ski trip; whether ‘s losing one’s poles, making it to the back bowls, or finding a run with untouched powder.

Snyder’s gestural strokes enhance the vintage quality of the pieces by bringing a fresh perspective to nostalgic moments. Her color palette acknowledges the era while bringing a fresh perspective to the pieces; a hint of yellow here, a dash of red there, draws the eye throughout the piece. Snyder encourages the viewer to relish these recreated moments that connect us to a beloved generation.
